Road Trip: Johor Bahru . Port Klang . Sekinchan . Ipoh . Penang . Butterworth . Muar . Johor Bahru Part 4/4 开车旅游: 柔佛新山。巴生。适耕庄。怡保。槟城。北海。麻坡。柔佛新山 4/4

Today, will be my first drive from Penang to Johor Bahru without breaking the journey into 2 days. We revisited Genting Cafe to try the Chee Cheong Fun, but no luck. Instead we had Lor Mee and Mee Jawa.

Knowing we will revisit Penang soon, we left in high spirits.

There were nice scenery along the North South highway, and especially in Ipoh.

A short toilet break at one of the rest stops before heading to Muar for lunch and some shopping. Traffic was light.

Arrived at Coconut Garden Food Court 椰树园美食中心 by chance while searching for Meng Choon 明春食品. Too bad the Kway Chap Stall 粿什档 was resting till 1 May 2014.

Our main reason was to visit Meng Choon for their Kuih Pintar 辫子酥. We love this snack very much.

In the same area, we saw another otak-otak brand and bought some to try. Fang Xiang Otak-Otak 芳香乌达 and then it is home sweet home, wrapping up this road trip of more than 1800 km by road.

There many ways to travel to Penang, by van/car charter, coach bus, by rail, by air and by cruise ship. However, it is only a road trip that can afford multiple detours to the various interesting towns, villages and states. The nice driving experience is another motivation, for those who enjoy driving :)

The End.

Good morning! We went for a stroll in the cool, fresh morning before breakfast.

Helpful information with maps to assist tourists and out-of-towners.

My favourite public bus.

Breakfast spot 1: Kheng Pin Kafe 群賓茶餐室. I simply love the Lor Bak and porridge here.

Breakfast spot 2: Toh Soon Cafe 多春茶座 Nice toast and half-boiled egg enjoyed in an alley. Kind of reminded me of the odd plant that grows luxuriantly out of cracks in a wall (notice top right corner of the photo).

Grocery shopping at Pasar Chowrasta and the lane next to it.

Bread exploration as recommended by Raymond. Business was brisk here and the mesmerizing fragrance from freshly baked bread filled the bakery.

Passed by another of the popular biscuits / peah shop, Ghee Hiang 義香, their sesame oil 麻油 is also well known. This seems like an express counter (similar to McDonald's take away counter / kiosk). Full sized shop is nearby.

After this, we went for a round the island drive, by the coast and up the hills, 有山有水,有景有妳。 Batu Ferringhi Beach (revisit), Tropical Spice Garden (there was a event going on), Teluk Bahang Beach, Teluk Bahang Forrest Eco Park and Penang Butterfly Farm.

Next come the hilly and winding road and the beautiful views at Teluk Bahang Dam.  A lone Heron was circling, fishing, I guess. We can see part of the sea and nearby houses, the forested hills and of the the dam.

As we enjoyed the scenic and relaxing drive, we have arrived at the fruit stalls, Durian Farms and into Balik Pulau. Now we know where to go, in the upcoming Durian season.

Mission accomplished, we head to the town for lunch, Kim's Laksa 金叻沙 in nostalgic Nan Guang Kopitiam 南光咖啡店. Then, we visited Laksa Balik Pulau 浮羅叻沙 to try their version.

Feeling really full,  we continued our drive and come to a scenic look out spot by chance. It looks out to The Malacca Straits, so I believe the sunset view will be fantastic.

There is a Thai Seafood Restaurant located up here, BP Anjung Indah Thai Seafood Restaurant. The drive up its steep slope made me feel I am going to heaven. One can literally dine by the cliff.

With the lack of time, we had to skip some parts and Bayan Lepas area and head towards Georgetown. Mrs Tea wanted to try Tambun biscuits / Tau Sar Peah / 淡汶饼 from Him Heang 馨香餅家. Just opposite is the popular Old Green House Restoran 老青屋餐室.

I took the opportunity to walk over to try A1 Bak Chang 肉粽.

Take a breather before we head for dinner at Kimberly Street 汕头街. We had Hai Koay Teow Soup 阿海现煮粿條汤 and 天皇鸡脚粿條汤, washed down with a refreshing cool 四果汤 at Dessert Old Time Delight Shop 汕头街养身糖水铺.

After that, we went for a stroll nearby and found room for a delicious plate of Nasi Kandar at Line Clear Restaurant (located in an alley).

After dinner, we saw lots of birds flying about a shop house that looked abandoned upstairs. Tired Birds returning to their nest? 倦鸟归巢?

Woke up early to Yum Cha (Drink Tea /Dim Sum) 饮茶 while the sky was dark.

We wanted to try the popular Foh San Restaurant 富山茶楼, but they open at 6:30am. Too bad, next trip then. (Neu Tea looking hopelessly at the shut gate)

Just across the street, is the Ming Court Hong Kong Tim Sum 明阁香港点心, which we like from our visit in 2013. It was opened and ready to feed our hungry stomach :)

With that, we set out for Penang, our next stop in this trip. It is the first time we are driving in and there was an air of excitement.  Before we get there, there was a AES camera that flashed at us, but we were travelling at 105km/h, it must be the car on the right lane that sped. I was too suprised to remember to smile, and to borrow the line from Captain Jack Sparrow, "You will always remember this as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow".

Beautiful greenery, the mature trees that lined along the roads and view of the many hills against the blue sky and white clouds. We are thankful for the great weather during the entire trip.

I had a recommendation from FB Friend Raymond, to try the Chee Cheong Fun 猪肠粉 at Genting Cafe 云顶餐室 after crossing the Penang Bridge. Fate has it that I had to miss this as they were closed for the duration that we were there (visited on my last day and still no luck).

With the fine weather, we visited Batu Ferringhi Beach and found that we almost had the stretch, we were in, to ourselves. Clean, white fine sand and it was such a pleasure to walk on them. The sea water was as clean and we can see small fishes swimming in it. Both if us were in love with this place and left our foot prints behind. The sun also left us with sun burns, ha ha ha.

There are many nice hotels and restaurants, drinking holes along Batu Ferringhi Beach and this Ship caught our eyes.

But we already planned to visit another Tei, our favourite Sushi Tei and had to pass the opportunity to dine in an "ancient" ship.

After lunch, we did some shopping here and bought gum for the return drive without stop to Johor Bahru over for the night. I have not chewed gummy since ...

Tea break time. We visited one of the popular shops for biscuits, Ming Xiang Tai 名香泰饼家 to try the Egg Tarts and peah (biscuits).

We found out that in Georgetown, many food and sights are near to each other, such that it is feasible to walk, cycle or hire a trishaw. One can rent a motorbike too. Next trip, perhaps. Next comes the famous Cendol.

The tallest building here, Komtar, towering over the shop houses, was a good guide for us to walk around, well, of course we have our smartphone with maps too.

Pasar Chowrasta is known for selling preserved fruits / bee kiam / kiam sng dee Jeruk 咸酸甜 and market stuff. Mrs Tea had a shopping list for the stuff here :)

We had a hard time locating Leong Chee Kee 梁池记老饼家 as they were off the main road.

We were too late when when we reached Cintra Street Food Corner 日本街肉粽茶餐室, they were already cleaning up for the day.

There were many interesting sights as we walked along the streets. This trip we did not had time to look for the famous murals but did see some others.

FB Friend Jason had recommended trying our the ferry to and fro Butterworth, to enjoy the skylines of both Penang and Butterworth. Sunset and Night views, with the sea breeze, it was a pleasant experience. The Penang Bridge is also visible, in the distant.

I was not able to capture the night scenery well, doing a disservice to the actual views.

After the ferry ride, we tried out the public bus service, Rapid Penang and really enjoyed it as what Jason had shared. Polite and helpful bus captains / drivers, buses in good condition, air-conditioned, and tickets affordable, was a good option to go sight seeing in Penang.

Dinner was Mala Steamboat at Lameizi 辣妹子.
